Chinese 21" Chess Set (Xiang Qi)

Chinese Chess, also known as Xiang Qi (She-ang Chee) or Elephant Chess, is the most popular board game in the world. It has been played in China for nearly 2,000 years, though it has been largely unknown to the west until recently, partly because the playing pieces have always been identified with Chinese characters. Now this set features pieces with symbols that represent the Chinese characters, so that you don't need to read Chinese in order to play. The wooden discs has the Chinese characters on the other side, for those who prefer. This fast-paced strategy game is similar to European chess in that the objective is to checkmate the opponent's general (similar to a king in European chess), but there are also several notable differences. The pieces are placed and moved on the intersections of the lines (like in the Go Game) and the playing board is divided in half by a river boundary. At the center rear of each battle camp is a "fortress" where each general and its 2 Guards are restricted. The wagon moves similar to a rook, the horse moves simlar to a knight. The elephant moves similar to a bishop, but with 2 space moves, and can not cross the river. A new piece, called a cannon moves indirectly jumping over a single piece to capture an opposing piece. Soldiers (similar to pawns move a single space forward until it crosses the river where it also can move sideways. There is no queen.This game features a plastic mat and large wooden pieces (16 of each colour) with a display box. It also includes a 26 page illustrated instruction booklet which provides history, game rules, and sample games.
