| This Japanese Buddha chess set is hand painted in Red and Ivory and packed in individual boxes and with foam protection for each colour. Each figure has symbolic props and gestures of the great Sutras. This set exudes Buddhism, with Happiness and joyful expressions in each Character. King and Queen have Traditional identity, but the Knight and Rook are new concepts showing another Incarnation of the Buddha, rather than the horse and castle, yet each piece is identifiable. The pawns of each side are different, one a Buddha like figure and the other, a Monk. Kings are 4.125 inches in height with a base of 1.5 inches. The bottoms are felted. This set is suitable for a 15 inch board with 1.75 inch squares. Chess board is not included. All pieces were cast in Hydrostone (a trademark of the United States Gypsum Corporation), a reconstituted stone material used by sculptors. The pieces were hand-painted to resemble aged ivory, given several coats of acrylic varnish, and then coated with a museum-grade paste wax to enhance their appearance and feel. |
